The NorthCape4000

The NorthCape4000 is one of the most demanding and iconic ultra-distance bikepacking events in the world. It challenges cyclists to ride from Central Europe all the way to the Arctic coast of Norway – a journey that pushes physical and mental limits while showcasing Europe’s vast and varied landscapes.

NorthCape4000 isn’t a typical race – it’s a global ultra-distance adventure that attracts riders from dozens of countries. The event is widely followed online and celebrated for its blend of sporting challenge, personal growth and cultural exploration.

Cyclists don’t just cross borders – they experience Europe in its entirety, from vineyards and Alpine passes to Arctic tundra and midnight sun. Completing NorthCape4000 is considered a standout achievement in the endurance cycling world.

The official route covers about 4,000 km from Rovereto (Italy) to the North Cape (Nordkapp), Norway, the northernmost point reachable by public road in Europe.

Across this ultra-distance course, riders pass through multiple countries, including Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland and Norway, experiencing steep Alpine climbs and remote Arctic terrain. The route is fixed for all participants, with key checkpoints (“Gates”) in major cities and geographic highlights like Munich, Berlin, Gränna (Sweden) and Rovaniemi (inside the Arctic Circle).

Typical total elevation gain exceeds 25,000–30,000 m over the course of the route, making it a major endurance test even for experienced cyclists.

Riders often average 150–300 km per day over 2–3+ weeks depending on pace and conditions.

Weather and terrain vary drastically: Alpine heat can give way to Arctic winds and continuous summer daylight near Nordkapp.
